USGS Invites Earthquake Research Proposals for Fiscal Year 2024 Grants
The United States Geological Survey USGS is currently seeking proposals for research grants in earthquake hazards science, ming to allocate up to $7 million funding. Interested researchers can submit their applications through the online portal on GRANTS.GOV using Opportunity Number G24AS00292. Note that all proposals submitted during the FY24 open application period are limited to a maximum of 15 pages.
The USGS Earthquake Hazards Program EHP has been supporting groundbreaking advancements in earthquake research over many years, now inviting innovative ideas med at delivering more timely and accurate seismic information, enhancing our understanding of seismic source characterization, and minimizing uncertnties in hazard and risk assessments. The program emphasizes proposals that contribute to mitigating the loss from earthquakes and improving public awareness about them.
To qualify for funding under the FY24 EHP grants, entities including colleges and universities, statelocal offices, non-profit organizations, private institutions, indepent scientists, engineers, foreign organizations, as well as any unaffiliated researchers are invited to participate. Noteworthy funded projects in the past include:
The implementation of Distributed Acoustic Sensing for early warning systems;
Regionalization of earthquake source and ground motionfor subduction interface events;
Construction of an extensive -Learning-based earthquake catalog for Northern California;
Identification of detection thresholds for large-to-great Alaska subduction earthquakes;
Incorporation of CyberShake 3-D simulations into non-ergodic ground motionin the Los Angeles region; and
Determining GNSS strn rate and uncertnty calculation techniques, with a focus on low-strn areas like the New Madrid Seismic Zone.

Each year, the USGS exts an invitation to innovative earthquake research proposals from various institutions across the globe. We're excited to see how these contributions will shape our understanding of seismic phenomena and improve preparedness agnst potential impacts.
