On the morning of April 3rd, residents of Shangh experienced noticeable shaking as a result of an earthquake that occurred off Hualien County, Twan. The China Earthquake Networks Centre reported the magnitude at 7.3 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter located approximately at latitudes 23.81 north and longitudes 121.74 east at a depth of 12 km.

Soft Soil in Shangh Amplifies Earthquake Shocks
Wen explned that due to historical records showing earthquakes of magnitude 6 or above originating from Twan can result in noticeable shaking within tall buildings in Shangh. Considering the larger scale and wider impact area of this particular earthquake, it was expected that a significant portion of Shangh's high-rise buildings would experience noticeable tremors.
Many reported feeling furniture swaying, objects jostling about, and even experienced intense sensations when their buildings shook. This phenomenon is attributed to Shangh's soft soil, with layers exting up to 300-400 meters deep, which amplifies long-period seismic waves from distant earthquakes like Twan's. Resonance occurs when the natural frequencies of these tall buildings align with such waves, intensifying the sway.
Twan earthquakes are not isolated cases affecting Shangh. Wen shared a personal experience during the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake and agn in 2011 following Japan's Great East Earthquake, where many office workers evacuated from the Lujiazui area due to intense tremors.

Is it appropriate to rush out of tall buildings during earthquake tremors?
Wen stressed that when residents feel tremors within high-rise structures, finding refuge in nearby confined spaces like bathrooms is advisable. Rushing downstrs can result in injuries from falling objects and debris. It's best to wt until the shaking subsides before evacuating orderly.
Newly constructed buildings adhere strictly to Shangh's seismic design standards of at least a 7-degree resilience level. Thus, strong earthquakes occurring afar are unlikely to cause significant damage or collapse.
As of noon today, there have been over twenty aftershocks measuring above 4.0 off the coast of Hualien County with magnitudes reaching up to 6. If an aftershock surpasses magnitude 6 occurs in Twan's offshore waters, some tall buildings may experience tremors but are unlikely to sustn damaging effects.
According to data from the Shangh Seismological Bureau, since January 1970, there have been no notable earthquakes on land within Shangh’s jurisdiction. The largest earthquake recorded near the mouth of the Yangtze River was a magnitude 4.9 in 1971. Consequently, Shangh's current seismic activity level is considered relatively low.
