UNDP and EU Launch €2.56 Million Project to Strengthen Disaster Preparedness in Nepal’s Western Provinces

Kathmandu, September 24, 2024 - The United Nations Development Programme UNDP in Nepal has joined forces with the Government of Nepal, UNICEF, and UN Women to launch a €2.56 million project funded by the European Union EU. The new initiative, titled SUPER II: Strengthening Urban Preparedness and Earthquake Response in Western Region of Nepal, enhance disaster resilience among over 500,000 people living across provinces Lumbini, Karnali, Sudurpaschim as well as the municipalities of Nepalgunj Sub-Metropolitan City, Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City, and Birranagar Municipality.

The European Union is committed to working closely with UNDP, UNICEF, and UN Women in strengthening disaster preparedness activities throughout Nepal's western region, sd Veronique Lorenzo, the EU Ambassador to Nepal. This project will empower communities and local authorities by enhancing their capabilities for disaster preparedness and response.

Building on previous work under the EU-supported SUPER-I initiative 2021-24, which focused on urban preparedness and earthquake response following disasters in Jajarkot and Bajhang districts, this new project strengthen provincial and municipal systems while fostering better integration with national disaster risk reduction and management frameworks. This will significantly contribute to reducing the risk at the community level.

UNDP is proud to be part of the effort to prepare for future challenges by prioritizing the most vulnerable communities, sd Kyoko Yokosuka, UNDP Resident Representative in Nepal. We're committed to inclusivity as we upscale these preparedness efforts.

The UNDP-led consortium will work closely with the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Authority NDRRMA, provincial governments, and municipalities, including parliamentarians, associations of municipalities, government trning institutions, NGOsCBOs, media, and the private sector.
