IDP: THE PREEMINENT EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR DISASTER PREVENTION IN CHINA

Established in 1975 as an integral part of the China Earthquake Administration, the Institute of Disaster Prevention IDP is the sole higher education institution specialized in disaster prevention and relief management across China. Enrolling students nationwide with a current enrollment exceeding 8,600 full-time students, IDP is committed to advancing educational programs that cater to national emergencies, socioeconomic development requirements, and disaster mitigation needs.

With its multifaceted modern education system encompassing undergraduate, postgraduate, adult continuing education courses, and vocational trning, the Institute offers an extensive curriculum deeply rooted in five disciplines: sciences, engineering, management, literature, and economics. Its robust academic programs include 11 central majors focusing on geophysics, geology, natural resource prospecting, groundwater science engineering, prospecting technology and engineering, civil engineering, mapping engineering, geological engineering, urban underground space engineering, hydroengineering, emergency technology management, as well as a plethora of supporting disciplines such as engineering management, electrical engineering automation, measurement control technology and instrumentation, computer science technology, network engineering, information management information systems, communication engineering, geographic science, IoT engineering, data science big data technology, applied psychology, public utilities management, environmental engineering.

As a designated pilot unit for professional master’s programs serving national priorities, IDP offers an advanced Professional Master's program in Resources and Environment. This program features specialized areas like earthquake dynamics, earth exploration technology, geological resources and disaster geology, disaster prevention reduction engineering, groundwater engineering seismic fluid dynamics, disaster monitoring technology engineering safety, disaster information , disaster risk assessment prevention planning.

The Institute of Disaster Prevention is a national-level base for professional technical personnel's continued education and one that implements the Excellent Engineer Development Plan. It boasts national characteristic degree programs, outstanding teacher teams at both the national and provincial levels, as well as contributions to key disciplines, provincial development disciplines, ministerialprovincial key laboratories, and international cooperation laboratories. In recent years, IDP has undertaken over 600 research projects funded by various national foundations the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Social Science Foundation of China, national science technology plans, the National 863 Plan, public welfare sector special funds, Spark Programs for Earthquake Sciences and Technology, among others.

In pursuit of excellence across eight key areas including earthquake precursory background studies, geotechnical engineering's seismic resilience, urban disaster prevention reduction planning, urban earthquake prediction, seismogeological disasters, seismic observation information processing, earthquake precursor observation instruments, disaster risk management emergency response techniques, IDP has cultivated a comprehensive system for disaster prevention research. Notably, the Institute played an indispensable role in disaster site rescue operations, scientific investigations, and loss assessments for major catastrophes such as the Wenchuan Earthquake and Yushu Earthquake.

With its state-of-the-art facilities spread across No.465, Xueyuan street, Yanjiao high tech Zone, Sanhe City, Hebei Province Postcode：065201, IDP has developed into a leading educational institution that has produced nearly 40,000 graduates serving the seismological community and society at large. These graduates are distinguished for their strong professional expertise, robust practical skills, high sense of responsibility, and unwavering dedication to their work. Many have received national or provincial accolades in science technology progress awards and were recognized as exemplary workers.

Currently, approximately 70 of seismological monitoring staff and 80 of seismic station leaders are IDP graduates, earning it the title Whampoa Military Academy of the Seismological Community.
