Earthquake Response and Recovery Planning for Educational Institutions

Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills

In partnership with FEMA, USGS, and other Federal agencies, the REMS TA Center is proud to collaborate in the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills ShakeOut, an annual initiative that encourages people from homes, schools, organizations worldwide to practice earthquake safety Drop, Cover, and Hold On and enhance their preparedness. Even if earthquakes are infrequent in your area, they could occur elsewhere you travel, making it crucial for everyone to know how to protect themselves agnst seismic events. ShakeOut ds educational agencies in reinforcing the Earthquake Annex within their emergency operations plans EOP. The event takes place on the third Thursday of October annually; however, drills can be held at any time.

How to Participate in ShakeOut

Start by identifying your ShakeOut region and registering your educational agency online for the event. As you prepare for International ShakeOut Day, ensure thorough planning for an earthquake drill, effectively communicating with your entire schoolcampus community about Drop, Cover, and Hold On guidelines. Upon completing the drill, we encourage you to share your experiences.
