Launch of Real-time Earthquake Reporting System, EarthX, at China Seismic Experimental Site

In December 2018, a revolutionary earthquake monitoring system, termed EarthX, was unveiled for real-time seismic activity detection and analysis across the provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan in China. This innovative platform was collaboratively developed by researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China USTC in partnership with the Institute of Earthquake Forecasting IEF, under the guidance of Prof. Jie Zhang, a leading expert from USTC. The system integrates advanced technologies from various disciplines, leveraging cutting-edge search engine and methodologies to promptly identify earthquakes, determine their location, magnitude, and source focal mechanism within seconds upon receipt of seismic data.

Key Contributions and Publications

Several pivotal concepts underpinning the EarthX system have been introduced in academic forums:

Distinguishing Features of the System

What sets EarthX apart from other operational global earthquake monitoring systems is its unique approach to processing seismic data. By utilizing full waveform information instead of solely relying on time picks, it extracts embedded data insights and produces reliable outcomes more accurately than systems that focus only on individual wiggles or picks in seismograms.

Automation via : The use of eliminates the need for intervention during monitoring operations, ensuring 247 continuous performance with consistent accuracy. Notably, EarthX's capability to handle noise and detect low-magnitude events M 2.0, often overlooked by data analysts, underscores its superior sensitivity.

Performance Potential

Recent applications of the system in earthquake-prone areas like Sichuan have demonstrated promising outcomes, suggesting a significant enhancement for disaster response strategies. Efforts are ongoing to refine EarthX's performance continuously through upgrading and enhancements.

System Overview

The operational setup of EarthX within China Seismic Experimental Site CSES is depicted in Figure 1. The system captures real-time data and processes it efficiently across the seismic stations in Sichuan and Yunnan provinces, showcasing its extensive coverage.

A flow chart of the EarthX system is illustrated in Figure 2, outlining how algorithms process multi-component seismic data from multiple stations to generate a three-dimensional probability map indicating the earthquake's location. The highest point on this map signifies the event's precise location with associated confidence levels expressed as probability values.

Lastly, an interactive concept akin to online image search engines is embodied in Earthquake Search Engine Figure 3. Given an input seismogram, this tool swiftly finds the best match from a pre-established database and promptly reports source information within seconds, emphasizing the system's efficiency and accessibility.

The EarthX system represents a significant advancement in real-time earthquake reporting technology. Its seamless integration of advanced algorithms with comprehensive seismic data processing capabilities promises to revolutionize early warning systems and disaster response strategies, underscoring its importance for both scientific research and practical application in seismology. The ongoing efforts med at system improvement and adaptation are poised to further enhance the effectiveness of EarthX in seismic activity monitoring.
