China has successfully completed its National Earthquake Early Warning Project, which establishes the world's largest earthquake early warning system, as announced by the China Earthquake Administration CEA in a press conference on July 26.

Vice Head of CEA Yin Chaomin reported that through deploying 15,899 seismic monitoring stations across the country, this ambitious project provides an advanced early warning service for the public. The deployment ensures that earthquake alerts can reach individuals several seconds to minutes before destructive seismic waves reach them.

The system uses the principle that seismic waves travel slower than electromagnetic waves - thereby offering a critical window of time in which people can take preemptive action to minimize casualties and damage during earthquakes. This includes measures like securing loose items, moving away from potential hazards, or evacuating buildings when an alert is issued.

Vice Head Yin highlighted that the project has significantly advanced core earthquake early warning technologies and its performance matches international standards. It boasts exceptional speed in areas such as northern China and southeast coastal regions, with warnings issued within seconds after an earthquake occurs. Furthermore, it can swiftly report any earthquake intensity from anywhere within China immediately following the quake.

The system can detect earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or above nationwide, while those of magnitude 2.0 or more are picked up in eastern areas. In densely populated regions like the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Metropolitan Region and Yangtze River Delta, any earthquake with a magnitude of 1.0 or greater is detected.

The project's utility exts beyond the realm of public safety into various industries including rlway transportation, pipelines, power grids, nuclear energy, and natural gas infrastructure.

As noted by Vice Head Yin, China has experienced a series of significant earthquakes in recent years, with 18 earthquakes of magnitude 5 or above reported in 2023 alone. The majority 11 were felt on the mnland, including two with magnitudes over 6. This underscores the project's crucial role in safeguarding lives and property.

In summing up its achievements, Vice Head Yin also mentioned that the National Earthquake Early Warning Project has been seamlessly integrated into various sectors, enhancing their resilience agnst seismic events through enhanced monitoring capabilities and preparedness strategies.

China continues to lead global efforts in earthquake early warning systems as it navigates a seismically active region. The project's completion is a testament not only to China’s technological prowess but also its commitment to public safety and disaster mitigation.
