Welcome to the Institute of Earthquake Forecasting IEF under the China Earthquake Administration CEA. Originating from the CEA Center for Analysis and Prediction, founded in 1980, it is one of five national institutions within CEA. The IEF specializes in earthquake prediction research based on a multi-disciplinary approach that includes geological studies, geodesy, geochemistry, space electro-magnetism, remote sensing technologies, and seismology.
The concept of Dizhen Yuce 地震预测, meaning 'Earthquake Prediction' or more broadly encompassing seismic hazard assessments from long-term scales down to estimates on aftershock probabilities, differs in Chinese usage compared to its internationally recognized term 'earthquake forecastprediction'. This nuance highlights the scope of tasks assigned to the Institute and exts beyond traditional definitions used elsewhere.
Over recent years, the institute has spearheaded national projects such as 'Earthquake Anatomy', overseeing the National Earthquake Monitoring and Prediction Experiment Site in Sichuan-Yunnan region. It hosts CEA's Key Laboratory for Earthquake Forecasting, serving as a focal point for research and collaboration on seismic phenomena prediction. This structure is akin to that of international institutions like the Southern California Earthquake Center SCEC, with its strong emphasis on merging technology development and application.
The Institute focuses on several core missions: long-term seismic hazard assessment spanning decades, intermediate-term time-depent seismic risk assessments from decades down to annual scales, short-term testing of forecastingfor periods shorter than a year, and emergency response efforts utilizing seismology and remote sensing data. It also conducts assessments on aftershock sequences and the impact earthquakes have on regional seismic hazards.
The dual role of promoting cutting-edge research in earthquake prediction through innovative methodologies while ensuring the practical application and relevance of current predictive capabilities is integral to the Institute's work. The integration of systems science for earthquake management reflects this dual mission, necessitating interdisciplinary collaboration and international partnerships. For example, a joint laboratory on High-Pressure Physics and Earthquake Science was launched in cooperation with the Chinese Academy of Engineering Physics CAEP in 2018.
The goal is to advance China's seismic resilience through synergistic research in earthquake science while considering societal impacts within modern contexts. The IEF ms for this dual mission to drive innovation across disciplines and facilitate global exchange, fostering a comprehensive approach that combines scientific advancements with practical applications in disaster management and risk assessment.
