The American Seismic Researchers and Practitioners have embarked on an exciting journey to China, facilitated by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. This initiative was suggested by Dr. Lu Yongxiang, President of the Academy, who sought a joint scientific exchange between US earthquake scientists and engineers in collaboration with Dennis Hwang, President of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Hawi, following a long-standing partnership dating back to 1911.
The core event of this trip was the three-day symposium titled ChinaUSA Symposium for Advancing Earthquake Sciences Hazard Mitigation Practices. The symposium's first day unfolded in Beijing with presentations from both Chinese and American experts. Subsequently, it shifted focus over two days to Sichuan Province, exploring the impact of the devastating Wenchuan earthquake that struck on May 12, 2008.
A significant part of this trip was a visit to Beichuan County, once home to approximately 20,000 residents but now preserved in its ruins as a memorial. The group also had the opportunity to view the newly constructed and master-planned town for 35,000 residents that has been rebuilt within just two years.
The symposium featured collaborative meetings with various Chinese organizations involved in earthquake research on Monday, October 18th, and Friday, October 22nd. These meetings med to exchange information about seismic science and practice, and to identify potential areas for future cooperation between the US and China.
Representatives from EERI Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, including its Special Projects Manager Marjorie Greene and President Tom Tobin, were part of these discussions alongside other American participants, such as Daniel Abrams, Doug Bausch, Richard Eisner, Eduardo Miranda, Mark Petersen, J. P. Singh, Kenneth Stokoe II, Yumei Wang, Mathew Francis, Nico Luco, Chaoying Luo, Ian Robertson, Christine Theodoropoulos, and Guangren Yu.
The symposium was co-sponsored by notable entities such as the China Science Center of International Eurasian Academy of Sciences CSCIEAS, Architectural Society of China, China Academy of Building Research, and China Earthquake Administration. It marked a pivotal moment for fostering international collaboration in earthquake science.
EERI provides its members with resources and connections to thrive throughout their careers, enabling impactful contributions through this shared knowledge.
encapsulates the spirit of global cooperation and scientific exchange med at strengthening the community's ability to respond effectively to natural disasters like earthquakes.
