In a storm that seemed to sweep under the radar amidst global headlines, Cyclone Michaung wreaked havoc upon the coastal regions of India. As Chenn, a city teetering on the edge of calamity, felt its fury, thousands found themselves caught between raging waters and collapsing infrastructurea situation mirrored only in their most dire nightmares.
On December 1st, Cyclone Michaung barreled towards the coast with ferocity that surpassed even the most severe records in the region's history. Chenn bore the brunt of a storm that forced more than 40,000 people to seek refuge and left countless lives in its wakeincluding Santhosh, an unfortunate young soul who was part of our Salesian mission family.
Amidst this chaos, Salesian missionaries were thrust into action, their familiarity with the area giving them an unparalleled advantage. Their presence as pillars of support allowed for a swift response, bringing hope to those most in need.
We are always ready and positioned closely amongst communities we serve, Father Michael Conway, director of Salesian Missions states. This proximity enables us to react immediately when faced with crises.
Their first line of defense came through swift rescue operations that saved over 150 students and teachers from areas cut off by the floodwaters. This team not only evacuated those trapped but also provided a crucial lifeline in the form of hot meals, safe drinking water, and essentials to nearly 1,500 people left isolated under deluge.
The Salesian Development Office, SURABI, took charge of broader relief efforts, providing d and resources to thousands impacted by the flood. In partnership with local authorities, they managed to deliver essential supplies like food packets, clothing, and medical kits, all while navigating through water depths that reached more than their knees.
The resilience shown by individuals living in such challenging conditions is truly inspiring, Father John Alexander shares from the frontlines. Our Salesian family worked tirelessly under hazardous circumstances to ensure everyone had access to basic needs.
But this wasn't just about immediate relief. With communities struggling to rebuild amidst the wreckage left behind, Salesian missionaries have since pivoted their focus towards rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts.
We understand that recovery is a long process, Fr. Mike notes. Our team has witnessed an incredible spirit of resilience among those affected by the disaster.
As we look ahead, there's hope in the knowledge that the Salesian mission stands committed to empowering young lives impacted by this crisis and beyond. Their dedication serves as a beacon of hope for communities facing uncertnty.
