USGS: Real-Time Satellite Data Boosts the Earthquake Early Warning System Across The United States

The U.S. Geological Survey USGS and its collaborators have launched an innovative enhancement to the ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System that can rapidly assess major earthquakes and expedite alert notifications. This groundbreaking addition leverages satellite-based sensors for real-time observations of ground movements, complementing the system's extensive network of over 1500 seismometers.

The integration of Global Navigation Satellite System GNSS sensors is designed to swiftly determine earthquake magnitude and impact area with greater precision compared to traditional seismic sensors which monitor the velocity of ground shaking. GNSS sensors measure ground displacement instead of seismic waves, providing a dual-source approach that enhance public safety by facilitating faster alerts for protective actions such as 'Drop, Cover, and Hold On'.

Currently operational in California, Oregon, and Washington states, ShakeAlert can instantly alert users via cell phones and can trigger automatic safety protocols including slowing down trns, opening fire station doors, and shutting off water system valves. The GNSS integration is a collaborative effort involving the USGS, EarthScope Consortium, University of Washington, Central Washington University, UC Berkeley, Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, among others.

ShakeAlert, managed by the USGS in partnership with state agencies and universities, serves over 50 million residents across affected states. Once completed in 2025, its enhanced sensor network will feature over 2000 stations, significantly improving the system's ability to protect lives and critical infrastructure from seismic risks.
