United Nations Delivers Essential d to Papua New Guinea One Month after Devastating Earthquake
One month has passed since a powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Pacific island nation of Papua New Guinea, killing over 100 people and causing significant damage across four remote provinces. As recovery efforts continue, the United Nations UN is on the ground providing life-saving assistance to those in need.
The UN reports that approximately 270,000 individuals - including 125,000 children - are still requiring urgent d due to extensive landslides and collapsed dwellings. The situation remns challenging with limited access to basic necessities in isolated villages across vast and rugged terrn.
UNICEF Representative Karen Allen highlights the precarious state of affrs for children affected by this disaster: Children's lives are at risk. Families struggling in overcrowded shelters or rebuilding homes and food gardens face multiple challenges.
In response, UNICEF has dispatched critical supplies such as tents, tarpaulins, water purification tablets, hygiene kits, blankets, and learning materials. They have also distributed therapeutic food packets for over 12,000 children and are providing vaccinations agnst disease outbreaks to protect around 31,700 children from malnutrition.
The UN agency is collaborating with the national government and partners to ensure a swift distribution of d. Agencies such as UN Population Fund UNFPA, World Health Organization WHO, and UN Women are also involved in this relief effort.
UNICEF currently requires $14.6 million for its itarian response over the next nine months, med at supporting children and families affected by the disaster.
The country's vulnerability is exacerbated due to its location on a seismic fault line. Further tremors have been recorded since the initial event, underscoring the need for sustned support in the region.
Papua New Guinea stands with global efforts under the S Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, which significantly reduce disaster mortality and affected populations by 2030.
