Read: 106

Executive Summary

Solomon Islands is vulnerable to a broad spectrum of natural disasters including earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, tropical storms, and flooding due to its geographical location. The nation has experienced several significant calamities such as the 2007 Gizo earthquake and tsunami, the 2009 Guadalcanal flash floods, the 2013 Santa Cruz earthquake and tsunami, the 2014 Honiara and Guadalcanal flooding, and the devastating effects of Tropical Cyclones TC Kevin in March 2023 and Judy in February 2023. While fatalities may not be as numerous compared to past events like TC Namu from 1986 that led to over 100 deaths and homelessness for up to 90,000 people, these recent disasters have substantially impacted livelihoods and the economy.

The country has been making strides in enhancing resilience since it was struck by Tropical Cyclone Namu in October 1986. The subsequent disasters from TCs Harold 2020 and the cyclones Kevin and Judy 2023, although they did not result in high fatalities, have still caused significant damage to people's livelihoods and economic stability.

The reference handbook focuses on Solomon Islands' disaster management capabilities as they work towards strengthening resilience agnst natural hazards. It includes updates on national capacities since 1986 when TC Namu caused substantial loss of life and displacement.
