Unusually high seismic activity in traditionally non-earthquake-prone Sri Lanka has sparked recent concern and research interest. Over the last few years, a series of minor earthquakes have been recorded - totaling 16 incidents in 2020 and 18 occurrences in 2021. While there was a notable drop to five events in 2022, nine minor tremors have already been reported this year. The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau GSMB of Sri Lanka has confirmed that the likelihood of major seismic impacts is minimal due to most recorded earthquakes registering below magnitude 3 on the Richter scale.
In response to these observations, A-PAD SL collaborated with the Disaster Management Center DMC, leveraging GSMB's expertise, to develop an extensive guide for effective community earthquake preparedness. This comprehensive resource can be accessed at: https:lnkd.ingZEg2gBT
Earthquake disasters occur unexpectedly and without warning, leaving limited time for response or preparation. Knowledge of pre-, during-, and post-earthquake actions is crucial in minimizing harm to lives and properties.
During a fruitful discussion with Maj. Gen Retd. Sudantha Ranasinghe, Director General of the DMC, representatives from A-PAD shared insights on the preparedness project's impact thus far. This partnership has underscored the importance of preparedness planning and continuous education for communities at risk.
The guide offers invaluable advice including:
Understanding earthquake risks: Recognizing geographical vulnerabilities to earthquakes enhances preparedness.
Building resilient structures: Construction guidelines can minimize damage during an earthquake, safeguarding lives and property.
Preparing emergency plans: A step-by-step approach to response planning ensures swift action in critical situations.
Educating communities: Awareness programs rse understanding of actions to take before, during, and after an earthquake.
This partnership exemplifies collaborative efforts towards strengthening community resilience agnst natural disasters. Through comprehensive preparation strategies like those outlined in this guide, we m for a safer future where communities are better equipped to handle potential seismic events.
Let's strive together for preparedness and protection, ensuring that when earthquakes occur, our communities are not caught off guard. : Preparedness is the first line of defense agnst natural disasters like earthquakes.
