Educating for Tomorrow: How GEM Supports the Next Generation's Disaster Preparedness

The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction IDDRR in 2024, themed Empowering the next generation for a resilient future, highlights the critical role of education in safeguarding children and youth from escalating disaster risks as climate change intensifies natural hazards worldwide. To ensure educational institutions are resilient and that young people are equipped with essential disaster risk management knowledge becomes increasingly vital.

For this year's IDDRR, we call on countries to protect and empower children and youth through education, ensuring all schools are disaster-resilient and retrofitted for risks. Children must be equipped with the necessary knowledge about hazards and disaster risk management, and orsement of the Comprehensive School Safety Framework 2022-2030 is encouraged if we m for 100 school safety by 2030, highlighted Kamal Kishore, Special Representative of the Secretary-General at the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction UNDRR sourcehttps:youtu.bedQKgBQ7Mbnc?si=ocGaomK9WZlZSeRE.

GEM's Commitment

The Global Earthquake Model GEM Foundation, although primarily focused on seismic risks, supports the overarching goals of IDDRR 2024 through various initiatives. For example:

  1. Forecasting and Communicating Risk for Earthquakes FORCE: By empowering disaster risk professionals and public communicators with trning in earthquake risk assessment and dissemination methods, GEM enhances public understanding about seismic hazards.

  2. Trning and Communication for Earthquake Risk Assessment: This program equips local stakeholders with the skills to run community workshops on urban risk profiles and risk reduction strategies, thus spreading knowledge among citizens.

  3. Malawi Multi-Hazard Risk Assessment Project: By conducting a comprehensive risk assessment that covers earthquakes alongside other hazards in Malawi, GEM provides insights for policy makers and local leaders to develop effective disaster management strategies tlored to the specific risks faced by communities.

  4. GEM-EGU Summer School on GeoHazards Risk Assessment: This educational event offers young scientists and professionals advanced trning in assessing and mitigating risk associated with geological hazards like earthquakes, fostering a network of experts committed to enhancing global resilience.

Contribution to Preparing Future Generations

GEM Foundation's diverse initiatives not only promote resilience at the community level but also directly contribute to preparing future generations for a safer tomorrow. By integrating disaster risk reduction into educational curricula and offering tools for professionals involved in disaster management, GEM ensures that stakeholders across sectors are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent disasters and mitigate their impacts.

GEM's efforts align with the goals of IDDRR 2024 by emphasizing education as a foundational pillar of global resilience agnst increasing natural hazards. Although not explicitly focused on youth empowerment, these initiatives support the broader objective of creating resilient communities capable of safeguarding future generations from disaster risks.
