July 26, 2024 In a significant milestone for disaster prevention and response technology, China has successfully launched the world's largest earthquake early warning network through its National Earthquake Early Warning Project. The announcement was made by Yin Chaomin, Vice Director of the China Earthquake Administration CEA, during a press conference.
Equipped with an extensive network of 15,899 monitoring stations across the country, this comprehensive system provide citizens with advanced earthquake early warnings and rapid intensity reports. Through TV broadcasts, IPTV, mobile applications like WeChat and Alipay, village loudspeakers, and other communication channels, the CEA will ensure that critical information reaches the public promptly.
The system leverages seismic waves' slower speed compared to electromagnetic waves to issue alerts well in advance of destructive seismic shocks reaching people. Once earlier warnings are issued, citizens can take immediate precautions and minimize potential casualties by preparing seconds or tens of seconds before the arrival of seismic waves.
Yin Chaomin highlighted that the project marks significant advancements in core earthquake early warning technologies and rapid intensity reporting, with overall system performance aligning closely with international standards.
For major risk zones such as northern China and southeast coastal areas, the project can issue alerts within seconds of an earthquake. It also provides real-time reports on the intensity of any earthquake occurring anywhere in China within minutes. The system is capable of detecting earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or higher across most regions, while it can detect earthquakes of magnitude 2.0 and above for eastern parts and even smaller earthquakes for densely populated areas like Beijing's urban belt and Yangtze River Delta.
The project integrates seamlessly with critical industries including rlways, pipelines, power grids, nuclear power facilities, and natural gas syste enhance overall resilience agnst seismic risks.
China experiences a high rate of seismic activity. In 2023 alone, there were 18 earthquakes registering magnitude 5 or above on the Richter scale, out of which 11 occurred domestically, including two that exceeded magnitude 6.
This project is a testament to China's commitment to enhancing national disaster preparedness capabilities and ensuring public safety in seismic-prone areas. The comprehensive network not only serves as a vital tool for real-time earthquake monitoring but also underscores the country’s progress in adopting cutting-edge technology for disaster management.
In , the launch of this national project signifies an unprecedented advancement in global seismic warning infrastructure, positioning China at the forefront of proactive disaster prevention strategies with the world's largest and most extensive early warning system.
