Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Learning and Legacy Program

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Learning and Legacy Program was initiated by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, operating from 2016 to 2018. This initiative med at capturing lessons learned from the devastating earthquakes that struck Christchurch in New Zealand in 2010 and 2011.

The program encompassed an array of stakeholders including businesses, public sector entities, communities, and individuals. Its primary goal was to generate a recovery legacy.

A key component of this initiative was EQ Recovery Learning website, which functioned as an online repository for over 300 documents sharing lessons and tools derived from the experiences during earthquake recovery. The website served as a platform that aggregated collective insights across multiple sectors enabling leaders and communities engaged in disaster recovery or facing complex challenges to benefit.

The content of the EQ Recovery Learning site was later relocated, following its decommissioning in July 2020, to UC CEISMIC. This new location provides continuous access for public viewing alongside long-term storage capabilities. We highly recomm bookmarking this URL: https:quakestudies.canterbury.ac.nzstorecollection22109, which leads directly to the EQ Recovery Learning collection on UC CEISMIC.

UC CEISMIC is a comprehensive digital archive that houses videos, audio clips, documents, and images related to the Canterbury Earthquakes from 2010-2011. This public-accessible resource is designed for long-term preservation of such materials.

The EQ Recovery Learning site's archival content is also safeguarded by the National Digital Heritage Archive.

An important event was the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Symposium, jointly organized by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet along with the Christchurch City Council. The symposium took place on November 29-30, 2018 at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch.

Following this gathering, a comprehensive report contning presentations was compiled and made avlable online via UC CEISMIC under its sub-collection dedicated to the Symposium.
